The Thrift Shop: A Community Staple
The thrift shop has been a staple in communities since the beginning. And they have continued to be the ultimate in bargain hunting. From essential items to that 80s jacket for a costume, the thrift shop has helped people out in more way than one.
Thrift shops originally sold clothing but later added furniture, housewares and even toys to their repertoire of goods. Some thrift shops aim to make a profit. While some thrift shops give back any of their earnings to local charities and help those in need.
These stores have been a haven for those that have fallen on harder times. As well as a go-to spot for costumes and unique pieces. You can even find funky vintage furniture, jewelry and shoes. My personal favorite is perusing the old leather goods and suitcases.
The biggest draw for many is that items donated will live a second life. Instead of filling landfills and garbage piles.
The popularity of reusing items, specifically electronic and household objects has seen a boom in recent years as people are becoming more aware of the effect the items have in landfills. Every thoughtful purchase counts and with more people trying to reuse the world will be a much better and greener place.
Look out for thrift shops in your local area offering discounts and deals and use #NationalThriftShopDay to post on social media.
