Look, if there is one surefire truth, it’s that us millennials have a hard time building credit. No one wants to give it, and that makes it extremely hard to build a solid history. So, I’ve put together a list of tips to help you out and get you ahead of the ball as quickly as possible.
Build Your Score With Proper Habits
A good credit score takes time, probably at least six months of on-time payments, but it’s not something that every really stops. So prepare yourself for that.
Good credit habits help show that you’re creditworthy, so try some of these ideas:
1- Make all of your payments on time, if bills go to collection agencies it affects your rating a lot. Set an alarm for yourself on your phone or in a calendar app, this will help you to never miss an important payment.
2- Use your credit wisely — find your balance with your spending so you can better control the payments required. If you over extend your credit and you don’t have enough income coming in the math does not add up for a good credit score and credit history. So stay within your means. You will thank me.
3- Regardless what a bank or place tells you, do not create too many new accounts at once. New accounts lower your average age and that affects your score. Focus on one or two and make sure you are keeping up with all of the necessary payments.
4- Check your credit reports yearly for any errors that may have happened. Get it sorted out ASAP. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to sort out issues. Make sure you keep track of all documentation that could be required to make a claim if something should go awry.
5- Don’t take unnecessary risks. Big purchases are a great thing to get, but if you can’t afford to take the credit card hit without raising your limit, take your time and wait. Nothing will tank your credit faster than over spending. Using 70 per cent or more of the allowed balance on your credit card can plummet your credit score quickly if you don’t pay right away.
